2018-03-18 · Gook review – LA’s answer to La Haine 4 / 5 stars 4 out of 5 stars. Justin Chon’s remarkable film centres on an unlikely friendship in the tense racial climate of early 90s Los Angeles

Gook provides a fresh take on the LA riots, relocating from South Central LA, to focus on the effects of the chaos on the surrounding communities and examining these pivotal events from a Korean-American point of view. Written, directed by and starring Justin Chon (Twilight series) with Simone Baker (American Horror Story), Curtiss Cook Jr.

On t Gook takes a rare look at race relations in the United States and does it with surprising delicacy that avoids preaching but never sacrifices its message. When the film starts we see an eleven year old African American girl we later learn is named Kamilla (Simone Baker) dancing while there is a small building on fire.The context for this is not given at first but it leaves a nice mental image She represents the hope of two different communities getting along, and one of the film’s most heartwarming scenes involves her and Eli going to a car wash to try and erase racist graffiti from the latter’s vehicle. (Notably, the spray-painted epithet “gook” does not wash off.) 2017-01-22 2017-09-29 2017-08-19 Gook is a great example of how to make a low-budget film feel bigger. We feel that the riots are near but we never directly see them, instead being shown plumes of smoke towering into the sky far away.

I believe Gook should not be overlooked. It is a film that will not leave you cold-hearted no matter what you think of it. It is set in Paramount, 1992 just before and during the riots in South Central, Los Angeles. Bedazzled is a 1967 British comedy DeLuxe Color film directed and produced by Stanley Donen in Panavision format. It was written by comedian Peter Cook and starred both Cook and his comedy partner Dudley Moore.
